RT-AC5300 - Crashing & Rebooting (Merlin 386.12)

Good Morning, Hello, Good Afternoon & Good Evening

I'm well aware that my router is completely out of date and no official updates have been made for over a year.
The last official Firmware version: 3.0.0.4.386.48377

Some history to my router problems:

I have from very early on of ownership had crashing issues with my RT-AC5300, but that was when it was still actively supported, and you hoped one day a new Firmware would fix or improve things.

So what happens, the WiFi will suddenly stop...

CTS/RTS Asus AX86U Pro

Hi Guys ,Sorry if this has been discussed already.

The RTS/CTS setting as it's default is basically set to disabled at 2347.

Has anyone played around with this and set it much lower and see if they experienced any difference as obviously this is designed to help or stop any fragmentation of data sent . With it set to 2347 my understanding is everything is going and coming at the same time which may or may not be causing fragmentation to the data so the router WiFi won't be working as...

Manually Assigned IP Address Not Respected for Repeater

Hello. My main router is an Asus GS-AX3000. I have recently added an old Asus RT-N10+ configured as a repeater for the 2.4Ghz signal. I try to keep statically assigned IP for all the devices on my LAN and when I added the repeater, I specified the RT-N10+'s 2 interfaces as shown on the GS-AX3000's DHCP page. In the attached DHCP.JPG image, you can see this:

However, after the main router reboots, I am seeing strange behavior in it's client list:

Bugs in WireGuard config UI

I set up WireGuard VPN server on the router but encountered a few issues that I thought @RMerlin might care about:
  • I changed the VPN subnet to a /24 in the 172.16.0.0/12 range, as it's visually distinct from those I typically connect to in 10.0.0.0/8 and 192.168.0.0/16. However, when adding a client peer, the suggested settings for addresses use values from the default 10.6.0.0/24 range, which are both incorrect and hidden in that expando. It would be great if the values were...

TP-Link AXE5400 (XE75 Pro) WiFi 6E triband vs BE10000 (BE63) WiFi 7 triband

Because aesthetics will be an issue, I'm considering between these two for a lakehouse (single floor ranch, maybe 1500 sq ft., streaming TV will be wired ethernet to the router, mid to low single digits of wireless clients, phones usually). I've searched and other than a successful recommendation for the AXE5400, there doesn't seem to be much else out there.

Is this because there is another manufacturers mesh that is better or is it just because traditional format routers are better and...

GUI not showing 5GHz or 6GHz traffic

So I recently added a managed switch into my home network setup. I am running Asuswrt-Merlin 3004.388.7. On the 'AiMesh' tab', when the router is selected, and I toggle the 'Network' window, Wireless - 5GHz and Wireless - 6Ghz traffic all shows 0s. I know that devices are connected to these Wireless networks as they show under that device when I check the client list. Not to many, my router is the only 6GHz capable device and my cell phone is using it. It does show 2.4GHz traffic...

New AIMesh system, no clients connect to AIMesh Node? GT-AX600 + AX68U

Yesterday I installed fresh/new GT6000 (AP) + AX68U (node). It worked great, yesterday! Now I'm noticing that no clients connect to the node, even when 10 to 20 ft away through 1 interior wall. The AP is on the extreme end, of the house 2 floors down (same locations as my prior AC86Us; worked great in same spots)
  • Ethernet backhaul
  • Node's 2.4g is OFF, AP 2.4g MAC filter for 5 specific devices that require 2.4g. All other devices forced to 5g (this is the same as my prior AC86U...

sbnMerlin 1.2.1 - Network Isolation Tool based on Guest Networks, April 19 2024

Hello Guys,

I'm writing this post to share the update version of the script I made that automatically creates ethernet bridge instances {bridge} for network isolation, based on the active Guest Networks. An ethernet bridge is a device commonly used to aggregate other individual ethernets (like: eth1, eth2, wl0.1, …) into one bigger ('logical') ethernet, this bigger ethernet corresponds to the bridge network interface. So it’s possible to create automatic separated networks allowing to...

Can anyone help with a couple of problems with an XT8 Mesh system? Issues with connectivity and client list and question about SSH command line.

I recently replaced a TP Link Deco X5000 with an Asus XT8 because the Deco didn't have a lot of management options, no traffic monitoring, and had a few annoying quirks. I'm starting to think I went from the frying pan into the fryer with this move. The Asus has more management options and a traffic monitor which the Deco didn't have, but apparently the traffic monitor causes problems so I can't really use it like I would like to and it seems to have its own set of bugs and annoying...

Using pfSense with a L3 core switch

I've been running pfSense with a TP-Link T1600G-28TS in managed L2 mode as my core switch for a while now where interVLAN routing including mDNS is managed by the pfSense box. Since that switch has L3 capabilities, I'd like to learn how to use them should the day arise when video streams need to cross between VLANs and the pfSense struggles with it.

From several posters here, it seems that pfSense does not play well with L3 switches and that extreme care should be taken setting up a network...

This affects Windows, Linux, iOS, and macOS, but not Android because Android does not support DHCP option 121.
It seems network namespaces can avoid this problem.

Band steering in Asus Merlin

I am thinking of purchasing an Asus router, after a lot of reading and asking in forums, I have decided on an Asus and I can have Asus Merlin.
One question I have is, how does band steering work on Asus Merlin?

My question is why, other routers (I will omit brand) put the word band steering very big and, tested in a multitude of ways, it does not work, if it picks up x device in 2.4, it does not release it even though 5Ghz has better values.
This does not...

I make beta versions of the next kamoj add-on.

The 5.5 beta has a lot more functions than the 5.0 beta and 5.4 betas.
The objective is to in the near future make an official release!

But first I need some voluntary testers to find serious bugs,
anyone is welcome to test 5.5 beta.

To be a beta tester of this hobby project includes that you must be active;
as tester reporting success/error, and/or in the SNB forum.
Are you willing to give feedback, and contribute to the...

Scheduling local clients (stop kids from using local Plex at night)

I've been using Parental Controls > Time Scheduling to disable the internet for our FireTV stick and the TV itself for a while.

But once the internet stops, the kids can still move to our local Plex server and keep watching from there.

Any idea if there is an easy fix to this? I have no problem with command line, cron or scripts.

Thanks for any pointers and sorry for the non-technical request.

Switching from Asus AIMesh

I currently have an Asus RT-AX86U with a couple of RT-AC68Us configured as an AIMesh using ethernet/wired backhaul which provides whole-house WiFi coverage, which I'm happy with given that my boradband speed is 70Mbps maximum. At some point, my home will be able to get FTTH / FTTP 1Gbps broadband and so my current setup won't be able to make the most of it, mostly because of the RT-AC68Us which (in my testing using iPerf) don't achieve anything above around 400Mbps. When connected to the...
