Prime Day - New Router

I'm in the market for a new router, upgrade from my RT-N56U. I saw on amazon where the Netgear R7500v2 is available for seemingly low price of about $125. The 56U I have works great, except it's a N and I need to upgrade to an AC. Any reason this isn't a good deal? The R7800 is about $65 more (was hoping it'd be the one on sale since it's ranked so high) but not sure it's worth it for me. I have 2 phones, 2 PCs and 2 TVs/Fire Sticks that connect and that's it. No heavy gaming, but do...

QNAP to WIFI using ASUS device

I have a QNAP TS-469 Pro NAS that I am having to move to a different room for a few months. Unfortunately there is no ethernet connection to the router and powerline adapters are not usable in the present situation.

This pretty much leaves me with the only option of temporarily connecting the QNAP device to a wireless adapter. USB adapters are very touch and go with QNAP devices, so I am pretty much left with the option of an ethernet > wireless adapter.

Being an ASUS fan (though I am open...

Hi Guys,

If I flash back the stock firmware, I can get 297Mbps in speedtest which is my subscribe internet speed. What could be the problem ?

Can I use wildcards in dnsmasq?

I'd like to be able to prevent all windows updates inside my local network, and since everyone is pointing at my merlin based router, that seems like a great place to block lookups of all the names mentioned in https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb693717.aspx, but they use wildcards for the names, so I'd need to block using some sort of wildcard mechanism as well. Is this possible with the dnsmasq on merlin?

How to best restrict what resources a VPN client can access (noob)?

Hello all

I'm a networking novice looking to setup a VPN that allows me to securely access my local NAS over the WAN. I already have this running using PPTP. The router acts as the VPN server. As it is now, this provides the VPN client (Windows & Linux laptops) unrestricted access to my entire LAN. I want to limit this so VPN clients have access to nothing but the NAS. What is the most robust/secure way to do this?

I'm thinking of creating two VLANs. Most of my LAN would run on VLAN1, but...

At first, I'm not a Merlin user yet. But I think about that...

RT-N66U 2.4 GHz problem

I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this please?

I've been using an RT-N66U for years since it's rock solid stable and has great wifi coverage in my house. However, I was messing about with IPv6 settings earlier today (to fix an unrelated issue) and something has happened to my 2.4 GHz performance.

With a device as close as a few feet from the router, I am getting sync speed of around 150 Mb/s but actual download speeds are terrible - like maybe 3 Mb/s maximum. And then when I check...

I notice there is a periodic slow down in wifi speed with my R7000 running V1.0.7.10_1.2.3. The speed would drop to zero for a few seconds and goes back up again. Some times laptop would lose internet but still connected to router. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

This is the 1st time I'm using these equipment and am overwhelmed by the many settings in the GUIs. Hope experts here can help me. Thanks!

VPN client on excluded device

I have a ASUS AC68U running merlin firmware. I have the router setup to connect to an OpenVPN sever and have a policy in place to exclude my Amazon TV. I excluded the Amazon TV because I use Playstation Vue on it and they do not support the use of VPN with their service.

I would still like to use VPN on this device when not using PS Vue. I have the possibility of still side loading a VPN client onto the Amazon TV if I wanted. My question is if I sideload the client and connect to the VPN...

I have for a few years been backing up my personal files on my Windows PC to my Synology NAS box using a differential backup method (Acronis true image 2014) which runs once a month. However of late i've had the need to be able to access my files on my NAS using my phone or tablet.
I have tried Acronis and Easeus applications to backup but this software will only backup the files as a compressed file (specific to Acronis or Easeus) which can only be accessible if you have the relevant...

I am affected by this error and cannot save image backups to the drive. The solution to this is to enable write access to everyone. What is the most beautiful way to do this for single share?
Is there such control in the GUI or should I modify smb.conf via postconf script in that way:
Code:
       create mask = 777
       directory mask = 777

Hello, found you guys while searching for router options and figured I would ask some questions to get a better feel for what I need to do.

A few details
- 2800sf tri-level split with finished basement
- Cable modem and primary router is in the top corner of the house (not ideal)
- Not power users
- More concerned about reliability than bandwidth
- Not wired for ethernet
- Need single SSID for walking around between the router and AP without dropped calls
Current setup...

Correct way to add DNS entry for ipv6

I am using the ASUSWRT-Merlin RT-AC68U 380.66-4 Firmware, and trying to register my router name in the DNS.

Not sure if this is unique to Merlin or should I post this in the Asus wireless area?

I added the following to /jffs/configs/hosts.add

2605:e000:aaaa:bbbb::1 RT-AC1900P-ABF0.psp.mydomain.com RT-AC1900P-ABF0
2605:e000:aaaa:bbbb::1 router.asus.com

this works, but if my ipv6 prefix (2605:e000:aaaa:bbbb) changes, then it won't be right anymore.

Is there a way to add the ::1 address...
