VPN tunnel passthrough error with Avaya ip phone on netgear c700

I have the netgear c7000 modem/router and have been working from home on vpn using this without any problems for a week. I have cable internet through time warner cable (earthlink high speed)The IT guy came yesterday to set me up with an avaya 9650 ip telephone because I don't have a home phone line. The phone would not connect when plugged into the c7000, it showed vpn tunnel failure. Then the phone said discovering and had some numbers.
